Two Americans Among Six Missing as Luxury Yacht Sinks Off Sicily Coast Amid Violent Storm

A luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning amid a violent storm. The yacht, named "Bayesian," was 160 feet long and sank near Palermo around 5 am local time (11 pm ET). At least one person has been confirmed dead, and six others are missing. The missing include four British, two Americans, and one Canadian passenger.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties

Italian authorities reported that 15 people were rescued from the water after the yacht capsized. Among the survivors were eight passengers, including a one-year-old baby, who were taken to hospitals and are in stable condition. The remaining survivors were brought to the Port Authority in Porticello. A dead body was discovered near the wreckage on Monday morning.

Captain's Account and Aftermath

Karsten Borner, captain of a rescue ship, described the chaotic scene. He mentioned facing a strong hurricane gust that forced his team to keep their ship in position to avoid colliding with the sinking yacht. When the storm subsided, Borner and his crew realized the Bayesian was missing. They had rescued 15 people, including four injured—three seriously—and handed them over to the Coast Guard. The search for the missing continues.
